One of the first questions photographers ask before entering photographic competition is, "How are images scored?"
While scores are certainly part of the competition process, they're only one piece of the experience. The real value of competition comes from what you learn along the way.
At the GPPA state competition, every image is evaluated by trained jurors using the Twelve Elements of a Merit Image. Each image receives a numerical score based on how effectively those elements come together to create a strong photograph.
Images scoring 80 or higher earn a GPPA merit. Those images are also eligible for category awards, including First Place and Distinguished Awards. (Awards are available to active GPPA members.)
Understanding the Scores
95–100: Exceptional
90–94: Superior
85–89: Excellent
80–84: Deserving of a Merit
75–79: Above Average
70–74: Average
65–69: Below Exhibition Standards
It's important to remember that a score isn't a reflection of your worth as a photographer. It's simply feedback on one image at one moment in time.
Many award-winning photographers have images that scored in the 70s before refining them into merit-worthy or even award-winning images. Competition is about growth, not perfection.
Why Order a Critique?
If there is one investment you can make to improve your photography, it's ordering a critique.
For just $10 per image, GPPA offers critiques from an official IPC juror. You'll request your critique when you register your competition entries.
During your critique, a juror will walk through your image, discussing both its strengths and opportunities for improvement. You'll gain insight into why your image received its score and, more importantly, what you can do to strengthen it.
Many photographers say they learn more from a single critique than they do from hours of trial and error on their own.
Whether your goal is to earn merits, improve your technical skills, strengthen your storytelling, or simply become a better photographer, critiques provide actionable feedback you can apply to future images.

One of the best ways to grow is simply by watching the judging process.
GPPA's competition is streamed live through PrintCompetition.com, allowing photographers to observe how images are evaluated and hear the discussions surrounding impact, composition, lighting, technique, and storytelling.
