Photography is often described as a relationship-based profession, yet many photographers spend much of their time working alone.
We photograph families, seniors, weddings, and businesses. We spend hours editing, marketing, bookkeeping, and managing our businesses. While we may interact with clients every day, it can be surprisingly difficult to find opportunities to connect with fellow photographers who understand the unique challenges and rewards of this profession.
That's one of the reasons GPPA created Illuminate: Create to Inspire.
More than a competition. More than a workshop. More than a photo walk.
Illuminate is an opportunity to spend a weekend surrounded by photographers who share your passion for creativity, learning, and professional growth.
Whether you're a longtime GPPA member, someone considering membership, or a photographer simply looking for inspiration and connection, Illuminate is designed to bring photographers together to learn from one another, encourage one another, and continue growing together.
Join us in Historic Downtown Valdosta for a unique weekend that combines photographic competition, business education, creativity, and community.
Friday July 31, 2026: Competition and Community
The weekend kicks off with Georgia Photographic Competition and Club 79.
If you've never participated in photographic competition before, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn. Competition challenges us to look at our work differently, sharpen our skills, and receive valuable feedback from experienced jurors.
But competition is about more than scores.
It's about growth.
It's about celebrating successes, learning from challenges, and encouraging one another along the way.
While competition helps photographers improve their craft, one of its greatest benefits is the community that surrounds it.
Club 79 has long been a place where photographers celebrate each other's successes, encourage one another through challenges, and learn together. Whether an image earns a merit or falls just short, the conversations, feedback, and support often become the most valuable part of the experience.
Many lasting friendships within GPPA began around competition rooms, image critiques, and shared conversations about photography.
The evening continues with dinner and a photo walk through Historic Downtown Valdosta, providing opportunities to create images, exchange ideas, and connect with photographers from across the state.
Saturday, August 1, 2026: The Santa Experience
Many photographers approach holiday sessions as simple Santa mini sessions—a quick setup, a fast-paced schedule, and a gallery delivered a few weeks later.
But what if Santa sessions could become something much more?
During The Santa Experience, GPPA member Javon Longieliere will pull back the curtain on the complete system he uses to create an immersive holiday offering that families eagerly anticipate, invest in, and return to year after year.
This isn't a class about poses, camera settings, or presets.
It's a deep dive into experience design, client psychology, and creating a premium offering that stands apart in today's market.
Attendees will gain insight into how every element—from the environment and storytelling to client interactions and sales strategy—works together to create an unforgettable experience for families while building a stronger, more profitable business.
Perhaps most importantly, attendees won't just hear about the process—they'll see it in action.
Whether you currently offer Santa sessions, are considering adding them to your business, or simply want to learn how to create more meaningful client experiences, you'll walk away with ideas that extend far beyond the holiday season.
The day also provides a unique opportunity to connect with fellow photographers, exchange ideas, ask questions, and learn from photographers who have already navigated many of the same challenges you may be facing in your own business.
Sunday, August 2, 2026: Explore, Create, and Connect
We'll wrap up the weekend with a photo walk through Historic Downtown Valdosta.
Photo walks offer a chance to slow down, explore, and photograph purely for the joy of creating.
Models will be available, making this a great opportunity to practice posing, experiment with light, and build your portfolio while spending time with fellow photographers.
Whether you're an experienced professional or just beginning your photographic journey, you'll find opportunities to learn from others and share your own experiences along the way.
Sometimes the best ideas come not from a stage or classroom, but from conversations with fellow photographers who understand both the creative and business sides of our profession.
Illuminate: Create to Inspire Weekend
More Than an Event
The schedule for Illuminate includes competition, education, photo walks, meals, and networking opportunities.
But the real value of the weekend isn't found on the schedule.
It's found in the conversations between programs.
It's found around the dinner table.
It's found while walking through downtown with a camera in hand.
It's found in meeting photographers who are willing to share their experiences, celebrate your successes, and encourage you through challenges.
Many photographers join professional associations looking for education.
What often keeps them involved are the relationships.
The mentors who answer questions.
The colleagues who become friends.
The people who understand both the creative and business sides of photography.
Illuminate was created to foster those connections.
- To provide opportunities to learn from one another.
- To share ideas.
- To create together.
- And to strengthen the community that makes our profession so rewarding.
Whether you come for the competition, the Santa Experience, the photo walks, or simply the opportunity to connect with fellow photographers, we hope you'll leave inspired—not only by what you learned, but by the people you met.
Join us in Historic Downtown Valdosta and become part of the experience.
Come create.
Come learn.
Come connect.
Come be inspired.
